{"id":143570,"date":"2023-02-16T08:38:58","date_gmt":"2023-02-16T08:38:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.yachtingworld.com\/?p=143570"},"modified":"2023-02-16T08:48:33","modified_gmt":"2023-02-16T08:48:33","slug":"caribbean-600-preview-no-super-maxis-but-plenty-of-battles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yachtingworld.com\/events-2\/caribbean-600-preview-no-super-maxis-but-plenty-of-battles-143570","title":{"rendered":"Caribbean 600 preview: no super-maxis but plenty of battles"},"content":"<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Over 70 teams from 16 different nations are expected for the the 2023<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yachtingworld.com\/rorc-600\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">RORC Caribbean 600<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> the 14th edition of the event, which will, start on Monday 20th February.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Royal Ocean Racing Club's<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yachtingworld.com\/rorc-600\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Caribbean 600<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is one of the great '600 mile' ocean race challenges, along with such epics as the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yachtingworld.com\/fastnet-race\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Rolex Fastnet Race<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and the Rolex<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yachtingworld.com\/tag\/sydney-hobart\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sydney Hobart Race<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Caribbean 600\u2019s tropical setting might lull you into the false belief that this race t is not such a hardcore event as other offshore classics, but that would be misleading. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yachtingworld.com\/rorc-600\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Caribbean 600 features a tortuous course<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> between islands, that requires crews to work with currents, beat into tradewinds and coax their boats through wind shadows in the lee of islands on one of the most interesting offshore courses to be found anywhere in the world.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The 600nm course circumnavigates 11 Caribbean islands starting from Fort Charlotte, English Harbour, Antigua and heads north as far as St Martin and south to Guadeloupe taking in Barbuda, Nevis, St Kitts, Saba and St Barth's.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Unlike previous years, the 2023 Caribbean 600 will not see any super-maxis competing. Last year we were treated to a battle between <em>Comanche<\/em> and <em>Skorpios<\/em> but with the former in Australia and the latter currently out of the water in Europe neither will be on the startline. Photo: Arthur Daniel\/RORC[\/caption]\r\n<h2><b>Multihull battle<\/b><\/h2>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Two 70ft racing trimarans are readying for a multihull showdown; Giovanni Soldini\u2019s<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yachtingworld.com\/tag\/foiling\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">foiling<\/span><\/a>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0Multi70<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> returns having<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yachtingworld.com\/races\/caribbean-600-course-record-for-argo-and-line-honours-for-skorpios-136931\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">missed out in 2022 to Jason Carroll\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Argo<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> for Multihull Line Honours<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> by just two minutes.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Argo<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is in the Pacific and not taking part this year, but MOD70 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Zoulou<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> with Erik Maris at the helm will provide formidable opposition to the Italian stallion.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Six<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yachtingworld.com\/multihull-guide\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Multihulls<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> are expected to be in action, including Gunboat 60 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Tosca<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> co-skippered by Ken Howery &amp; Alex Thomson, as well as Christian Guyader\u2019s ORC 50 Guyader Saveol skippered by Gwen Chapalain.<\/span>\r\n<h2><b>IRC Super Zero<\/b><\/h2>\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">IRC Super-Zero promises to be a thrilling six-gun shoot-out for round the world canting-keel raceboats, including four<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yachtingworld.com\/yachts-and-gear\/worlds-coolest-yachts-volvo-70-puma-138354\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Volvo 70<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">s: American skipper Roy P. Fireworks are expected from seven carbon-fibre 50-footers in the class: Eric de Turckheim\u2019s NMD 54 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Teasing Machine<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Botin 56 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Black Pearl<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> sailed by Stefan Jentsch, Niklas Zennstrom\u2019s CF520 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">R\u00e1n<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Henry de Bokay\u2019s Elliott 52 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Rafale<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Kate &amp; Jim Murray Pac52 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Callisto<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Infiniti 52 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Tulikettu<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> skippered by Arto Linnervuo and the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yachtingworld.com\/boat-test\/on-test-clubswan-50-95549\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ClubSwan 50<\/span><\/a> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Balthasar<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> sailed by Louis Balcean.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Smaller yachts capable of punching well above their weight include the HH42 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ino XXX<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> skippered by RORC Commodore James Neville, and Frederic Puzin\u2019s Ker 46 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Daguet 3 \u2013 Corum<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. The largest boats expected to be racing in IRC Zero include Todd Stuart\u2019s Swan 82 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">White Rhino and<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Marie Tabarly\u2019s 73ft ketch <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pen Duick VI<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Racing in IRC One will be local hero Bernie Evan-Wong\u2019s RP37 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Taz<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Bernie has never missed a RORC Caribbean 600 and will be competing as skipper for the 14th occasion. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Taz<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> will have strong competition from fellow Caribbean entry; J\/121 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Whistler<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> skippered by Peter Lewis.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Experienced British entries in IRC One include Andrew &amp; Sam Hall\u2019s Lombard 46 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pata Negra<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and Global Yacht Racing\u2019s First 47.7 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">EH01<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, skippered by Andy Middleton. Laurent Courbin\u2019s First 53 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Yagiza<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> will be taking part in its debut race with race-veteran Philippe Falle as skipper. Lionel Regnier\u2019s 58ft Briand sloop <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">L\u2019Esprit d\u2019Equipe<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is also entered. The Class40 fleet has seen significant growth in recent years and is at the forefront of offshore<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yachtingworld.com\/tag\/shorthanded-sailing\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">shorthanded racing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> development.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ambrogio Beccaria, winner of the 2022 Normandy Channel Race and second in the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yachtingworld.com\/tag\/route-du-rhum\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Route du Rhum<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, will be racing the Guelfi-designed <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Alla Grande \u2013 Pirelli<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. One of the latest designs from the drawing board of Sam Manuard, the Mach 40.5 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">IBSA<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, will be raced by Alberto Bona. Fellow Italian skipper Andrea Fornaro, class winner for the 2022 Round Ireland Race, will be racing the VPLP-designed <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Influence<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. The Verdier-designed Class40 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">BHB<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> won the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yachtingworld.com\/races\/caribbean-600-course-record-for-argo-and-line-honours-for-skorpios-136931\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">2022 RORC Caribbean 600<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and the boat returns now under skipper Paul Brandel.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Third in 2022, Olivier Delrieu returns with his Mach40 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Vicitan<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Another returning winning boat is the Botin-designed <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Tales II<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> which won the RORC Caribbean 600 in 2016. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Tales II<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> returns under the skipper Jean-Baptiste Daramy. Axel Trehin, winner of the 2021 Normandy Channel Race will be racing his Raison-designed <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Project Rescue Ocean<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">From the United States, two Mach40.3s will be making their RORC Caribbean 600 debuts, including Greg Leonard\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Kite<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, second in the 2022 Sevenstar Round Britain &amp; Ireland Race.
