After nearly two years of limitations, many of us are hankering for wider horizons, to escape the Zoom meetings, look beyond the box-set, and sense freedom once again. But international travel is still not straightforward: entry regulations and health checks vary frequently, and simply keeping on top of the ever-changing rules is time-consuming and stressful.\r\n\r\nSo it\u2019s no surprise that organised rallies are seeing a resurgence. Already the default option for many cruising sailors planning to take on a first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yachtingworld.com\/tag\/atlantic-crossing\">transocean passage<\/a>, many rallies are gathering bumper entries for 2022 and beyond after cruisers postponed their 2020\/21 plans.\r\n\r\nBut there are also growing numbers of sailors prompted by the pandemic to make the leap to long-term cruising, and for whom the safety net of an organiser on call, who\u2019ll keep on top of the health protocols and even catch your lines on arrival, was the deciding factor.\r\n\r\nJeremy Wyatt of the World Cruising Club, organisers of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yachtingworld.com\/tag\/arc\">ARC transatlantic rally<\/a> among other events, is seeing a trend: \u201cWe are definitely getting some interest from sailors because of the extra administration that Covid is causing them as a cruiser.\r\n\r\n\u201cBut I would also say there\u2019s been a definite mindset of people reviewing their lives, looking at what their priorities are and saying \u2018No, we need to go and do what we talked about doing\u2019. So in terms of numbers of enquiries and how it\u2019s looking for next year, it\u2019s really gone crazy.\u201d\r\n\r\nWyatt has noticed that an increasing proportion of enquiries come from the younger families. \u201cThe 40-something families are the ones deciding, \u2018Let\u2019s go and do it. Why are we sitting in the rat race?\u2019\u201d\r\n\r\nWith up to four or five years from first enquiry to first rally entry for many ARC crews, Wyatt is expecting participation numbers to stay high for years to come.\r\n\r\nAllie Smith, head of group events at Oyster Yachts and organiser of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yachtingworld.com\/blogs\/david-glenns-blog\/tales-from-the-oyster-rally-858\">Oyster World Rally<\/a>, has noticed similar: \u201cWe\u2019ve got experienced owners that are on maybe their third or fourth Oyster that have taken the plunge. And we\u2019ve got people that wanted to seize the day, and just said: \u2018This is what I want to do. I\u2019m going to buy an Oyster \u2013 whether new or brokerage \u2013 to just do it.\u2019\r\n\r\n\u201cThe vast majority of [owners] now confirmed as taking part are the type that will think, \u2018Right, we\u2019re just going to go for it.\u2019 We know things may not be as we would like them to be in certain places. Photo: James Mitchell[\/caption]\r\n<h2>Where it all began<\/h2>\r\nA rally can be anything from a loose group of friends who choose to sail in approximately the same direction at the same time, to a commercially run, strictly organised series of stopovers with a full maintenance, service and social programme, and range from free to join, to tens of thousands of pounds.\r\n\r\nOver the past decade several small rallies have been absorbed by the larger, more professionally-run events, while others in less popular seas have been cancelled. However, social media now enables sailors to connect, share information, and liaise to cruise in company in a more informal set up.\r\n\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.yachtingworld.com\/cruising\/jimmy-cornell-a-life-at-sea-135359\">Jimmy Cornell<\/a> is widely regarded as having created the first organised cruising rally when he formed the World Cruising Club to run the inaugural Atlantic Rally for Cruisers in 1986. \u201cThe ARC was certainly the first properly organised transocean sailing event,\u201d Cornell explains.\r\n<h2>Enduring concept<\/h2>\r\n\u201cI happened to be in Las Palmas on Gran Canaria in November 1985 and a group of French cruising boats had been brought together by a Frenchman, Guy Plantier, for an Atlantic crossing named Le Transat des Alis\u00e9es. People arrived when they felt like it, and it all looked like the proverbial attempt at herding cats.\r\n\r\nBut I could see the potential of organising a proper sailing event with its own structure, rules and regulations, and an absolute stress on safety. That structure, which I\u2019d laid down in those early days, has been followed to this very day in the ARC, and has been adopted by countless other rallies.\r\n\r\n\u201cI spoke to Dick Johnson [Yachting World editor of the time]. He embraced the idea wholeheartedly and the ARC has been closely associated with the magazine ever since.\r\n\r\n\u201cI am convinced that the rally concept will continue to attract participants for the same reasons, especially the safety aspect in today\u2019s uncertain world, as it is even more important to be part of an event where the organisers are in a position to liaise with the hosting authorities.\u201d\r\n<h2><img class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-136499\" src=\"https:\/\/keyassets.timeincuk.net\/inspirewp\/live\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2022\/01\/YAW269.rally_guide.rallies_map_latest_3-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1440\" \/><\/h2>\r\n<h2>Full circle sailing rallies<\/h2>\r\n<h3>Grand Large Yachting World Odyssey<\/h3>\r\n<strong>Start:<\/strong> Cherbourg and La Grande-Motte, France; Seville, Spain; Key West, USA.\r\n\r\n<strong>Route:<\/strong> This three-year epic has two routes, including one <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yachtingworld.com\/practical-cruising\/through-the-panama-canal-everything-you-need-to-know-119045\">through the Panama Canal<\/a>, an option of going around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yachtingworld.com\/voyages\/sailing-cape-horn-worlds-largest-ketch-aquijo-122531\">Cape Horn<\/a>, and several start options from France and Key West from autumn 2021-January 2022. The two routes, one along the tropical tradewind route, and one around Patagonia, will come together in Tahiti.\r\n\r\n<strong>About:<\/strong> Created to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the first circumnavigation of the globe by Ferdinand Magellan and Juan Sebastian Elcano, it was originally only open to Grand Large Yachting models but later opened to a limited number of other yachts. The first edition has 32 participants, the second is planned to start in 2025.\r\n\r\n<strong>Cost:<\/strong> c.\u20ac40,000\r\n\r\n<strong>Info: <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/gly-world-odyssey.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">gly-world-odyssey.com<\/a>\r\n<h3>Oyster World Rally<\/h3>\r\n<strong>Start:<\/strong> Antigua, January 2022.\r\n\r\n<strong>Route:<\/strong> Headed west through the Panama Canal, across the Pacific, past Vanuatu and north Australia, Cape Town, up the coast of Brazil and back to Antigua: a 27,000-mile circumnavigation.\r\n\r\n<strong>About:<\/strong> Fully booked for 2022. The fleet is made up of a wide range of Oyster models, ranging from 56ft-70ft plus. Registration for 2024\/25 is now open, with a waiting list already filling up. Prestart seminars and training included, while Oyster service team will assist with repairs, sourcing parts etc at stopover ports.\r\n\r\n<strong>Cost:<\/strong> From \u00a340,000-\u00a370,000 according to length of boat.\r\n\r\n<strong>Info: <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/oysteryachts.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">oysteryachts.com<\/a>\r\n<h3>World ARC<\/h3>\r\n<strong>Start:<\/strong> Saint Lucia and Australia, 2023.\r\n\r\n<strong>Route:<\/strong> A 26,000-mile tradewind circumnavigation, which starts from St Lucia, through the Panama Canal and across the Pacific to Australia. Crews can opt to end their voyage, or rejoin after some time out, in Australia. The return leg from Australia visits Cocos Keeling, Mauritius, Reunion, South Africa, Namibia, St Helena, then on to Salvador, Brazil. Justly renowned for its thorough safety checks, pre-start briefings and seminars, and detailed organisation, the ARC is now in its 36th year. Thousands of sailors have begun their bluewater cruising adventure after being guided through the process by the WCC\u2019s famous yellow shirted staff.\r\nThe ARC includes a racing division with logged engine hours and a handicap applied, while the bulk of the fleet cruise across the Atlantic\r\nat leisure.\r\n\r\n<strong>Cost:<\/strong> \u00a31,500 per 45ft yacht, \u00a3150 per adult.\r\n\r\n<strong>Info:<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/worldcruising.com\/arc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">worldcruising.com\/arc<\/a>\r\n<h3>ARC+<\/h3>\r\n<strong>Start:<\/strong> Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, November.\r\n\r\n<strong>Route:<\/strong> Canaries to Grenada, via the Cape Verdes.\r\n\r\n<strong>About:<\/strong> Originally launched in response to the ever growing popularity of the ARC, this more southerly route with an additional stopover attracts many family crews, setting off a week before the ARC. Starts at Maraj\u00f3 Island, the largest marine river island in the world, at the mouth of the Amazon and navigates river channels upriver to tropical Alter do Ch\u00e3o. It has no set schedule or route, boats join from many different locations and it runs both east-west and west-east. The fleet usually grows as it travels down the west coast from California but most join from Mexico before heading through the Panama Canal. Entry includes a Panama Canal agent. Time frame is determined by the start and finish of the hurricane season. Boats range in size from 30-footers upwards, with the average age of a participants 45-65 and plenty of families taking part.\r\n\r\nParticipants choose their own route, stopping in discounted marinas or verified anchorages, liaising via chat groups and radio nets. There is a strong emphasis on exploration and the environment. Organisers do not insist on vaccination for participants but strongly encourage it. Many locations on the route have mandatory vaccination policies or are high risk for Covid.\r\n\r\n<strong>Cost:<\/strong> $200.\r\n\r\n<strong>Info:<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/panamaposse.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">panamaposse.com<\/a>\r\n<h3>Salty Dawg Caribbean Rally<\/h3>\r\n<strong>Start:<\/strong> Hampton, Virginia USA, November.\r\n\r\n<strong>Route:<\/strong> Chesapeake to Antigua, or the Abacos in the Bahamas.\r\n\r\n<strong>About:<\/strong> Claims to be the largest rally leaving the US East Coast each autumn. Caters to a slightly older crowd but with plenty of families also taking part.\r\n\r\n<strong>Cost:<\/strong> $300.\r\n\r\n<strong>Info:<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/saltydawgsailing.org\/caribbean-rally\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">saltydawgsailing.org\/caribbean-rally<\/a>\r\n<h3>The Baja Ha-Ha<\/h3>\r\n<strong>Start:<\/strong> San Diego, November.\r\n\r\n<strong>Route:<\/strong> San Diego to Cabo San Lucas, California.\r\n\r\n<strong>About:<\/strong> A 750-mile rally down the western coast of California with stops, delivering yachts to the southern tip of the Baja Peninsula. The Ha-Ha was cancelled last year but it\u2019s back for its 27th running in 2021 (organisers say over 10,000 sailors have cruised with the Ha-Ha over the years). The rally is open to yachts 35ft upwards, and is designed to offer a safe passage from the US east coast to the Caribbean between late summer hurricane season and before early winter gales begin. Usually attracts 25-35 boats. Now, many multihulls that were ordered post-2020 are on the water. In this year\u2019s ARC rally there were 16 new boats that had been launched in this year alone, of which 15 were multihulls. We caught up with some of their owners in Las Palmas to find out how the purchase process went and how they\u2019d expedited preparations to get transatlantic-ready. Custom solutions Chet Chauhan bought Navasana, a Nautitech 46 Open, in 2021, having previously raced and cruised monohulls. After moving from England to the US west coast for work, he sailed his 20-year-old 38ft Beneteau from San Francisco to Sydney with a previous girlfriend in 2010. \u201cWe visited all the island groups along the way and absolutely loved it. I wanted to keep going, but obviously needed more funds. And I realised the boat wasn\u2019t ideal.\u201d He moved back to Europe, where he met partner Jessy. Two years ago they decided to revisit Chet\u2019s dream of sailing around the world. Deciding to buy a multihull was fairly straightforward. \u201cI\u2019ve had four monohulls before and I used to race, I like a boat that performs and really enjoy the sailing. We\u2019d seriously thought about getting a monohull for this trip, but I realised that you\u2019re spending maybe 80% of the time at anchor, and this is just more liveable. Having decided on a Nautitech 46 the couple initially looked for a second-hand boat, but quickly realised it was near-impossible to find. \u201cSo we decided to order a new one, and we were, I think, just in time. We had a year\u2019s wait time until ours was delivered,\u201d Jessy recalls. The couple took delivery of Navasana in March this year, the boat delivered on time to the day. They had several after-market upgrades added in La Rochelle, which Chet had specified and organised through their broker, including solar, lithium batteries and custom-built davits. Chet, who details a lot of the technical modifications to his boat at sailingnavasana.com, says the Nautitech owner\u2019s Facebook group was helpful in working through options and custom solutions, although he was clear on what he wanted to achieve based on his previous Pacific crossing. Navasana has 1,200W of solar on a fixed arch above the tender, plus an additional 880W of flexible Sunpower panels, a 3,000W inverter, 4x200Ah Victron lithium batteries, while the standard 2x115A\/12V alternators were wired into the lithium setup. They opted for no air conditioning. Sails were focussed on light airs performance to avoid motoring, including an Oxley Levante Parasailor and extra-deep 95m2 Code 0. Additional after-market modifications include rope-cutters on the propellers and a clear-view Racor fuel filter system, a B&amp;G forward-facing camera on the mast, and an Acuva UV filter for drinking water.
